Standard tipping in the US ranges from 15-20% for good service, with 18% being common. For exceptional service, 20-25% is appropriate. For poor service, 10-15% is acceptable, but it's better to speak with management about issues.
Traditionally, tips are calculated on the pre-tax amount (subtotal). However, some people tip on the total including tax. Our calculator applies the tip to the subtotal by default, which is the most common practice.
For unequal consumption, consider splitting proportionally based on what each person ordered, or agree beforehand on how to handle differences. Some groups prefer to split equally for simplicity, while others calculate individual contributions based on actual consumption.
